Apple Intelligence Comes to China on Alibaba Qwen: Dates, Devices, What Is Missing

Apple Intelligence finally reaches China in December 2026 with iOS 27.3, powered by Alibaba Qwen instead of ChatGPT. Beta starts Nov 4, but Siri AI is missing.

Apple Intelligence in China infographic: powered by Alibaba Qwen, beta Nov 4, public Dec 2026, iOS 27.3, iPhone only

On October 31, 2026, Apple confirmed what iPhone owners in China have waited more than two years for: Apple Intelligence is finally coming to mainland China. The twist is the engine under the hood. Outside China, Siri can hand tricky questions to ChatGPT. Inside China, that job goes to Alibaba's Qwen model instead.

Testing starts on November 4, 2026 in the latest iOS developer beta, and the public release arrives in December 2026 with iOS 27.3. There is a catch, and it is a big one: this is the first generation of Apple Intelligence, not the newest version. The rebuilt Siri AI and the other next-generation features Apple announced at WWDC 2026 are not included.

The difference is not a quality judgment, it is a rollout gap. China gets the 2024-era feature set, two years after it reached the US with iOS 18.1, while the rest of the world has moved on to the next generation.

The road to the China launch

Apple Intelligence China timeline: unveiled June 2024, China regulator registers on-device AI July 2026, developer beta Nov 4 2026, public launch Dec 2026 with iOS 27.3

July 2026China's cyberspace regulator registers Apple's on-device generative AI service, clearing a major hurdle

One wording detail matters for testers. Apple confirmed November 4 as the start of testing in China, not necessarily the release date of the beta build itself. MacRumors notes the November 4 China date likely means November 3 in US time, because of the time difference.

What Qwen actually does inside the iPhone

Qwen is not a separate app you open. It works inside three places Apple users already use:

  • Siri. For certain requests, Siri can call on Qwen's broader knowledge to answer directly. You also get an improved Siri experience with Type to Siri, but not the rebuilt Siri AI.
  • Writing Tools. A Compose with Qwen feature generates original content from scratch, including text and images, on any topic. The standard Writing Tools features for rewriting, proofreading and summarizing are included too.
  • Visual Intelligence. You can ask questions about photos and documents, including PDFs and presentations, using Qwen's text and image understanding.

To use Qwen, you sign in with a Qwen account or with Sign in with Apple. Apple says it asks for permission before any question, document or image is sent to Qwen, and Alibaba says requests and responses sent through the integration will not be used to train its models.

What is included in the first batch

Apple's first batch counts about 18 features. The best known ones are:

  • Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone, and in person with recent AirPods
  • Writing Tools for rewriting, proofreading and summarizing, plus Compose with Qwen
  • Visual Intelligence through Camera Control
  • Clean Up in Photos, which removes objects from pictures
  • Genmoji for custom emoji
  • Natural-language photo search and Memories movies
  • Priority Messages and summaries in Mail, Smart Reply
  • Notification summaries and priority notifications, plus the Reduce Interruptions Focus
  • Summaries of transcribed calls and Notes recordings
  • Type to Siri

What is missing, and why it matters

  • Siri AI. The rebuilt assistant that arrived elsewhere with iOS 27 is not part of the China launch. Apple says plainly that the update does not include Siri AI or the other next-generation Apple Intelligence features from WWDC 2026.
  • Image Playground. Apple's image generator is not on Apple's China feature list, and MacRumors reports it is missing.
  • Other platforms. The initial rollout is iPhone only. Support for iPad, Mac and other platforms will follow only after the necessary regulatory approvals are obtained.
  • A firm December date. Apple has confirmed December with iOS 27.3, but not the exact day.

For a buyer, the practical meaning is simple: if you buy a supported iPhone in China in December, you get a solid first-generation AI package, but you should not expect the newest Siri.

Which iPhones support it

DeviceSupported
iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro MaxYes
iPhone 16 and later, including iPhone 16e and 17eYes
iPhone AirYes
iPhone DuoYes
iPhone 15 and older standard modelsNo

Two settings are also required: both the device language and Siri must be set to English or Simplified Chinese. Eligibility is tied to China as well: the feature is available to users who bought an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone in China, or whose device region and Apple Account country or region are both set to China.

Who should do what now

If you are a developer in China: install the latest iOS developer beta from November 4 and test Qwen in Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence against your own workflows, especially document questions, since PDFs and presentations are a headline use case.

If you are a regular iPhone owner in China: wait for the December public release with iOS 27.3, and check that your phone is on the supported list above. If you own an iPhone 15 or older standard model, this update will not bring Apple Intelligence to your phone.

If you run a business in China: treat this as a productivity update, not a reason to change phones on its own. Live Translation, Writing Tools and document Q and A are the features most likely to save time day to day, and they all arrive in the first batch.

If you are outside China: nothing changes for you. This rollout is specific to mainland China, and your Apple Intelligence setup keeps working as before.

Why Apple chose Qwen

Apple Intelligence outside China leans on ChatGPT for questions beyond Apple's own models. ChatGPT is not available as a consumer service in mainland China, and Chinese rules require generative AI services to clear regulatory registration first. Partnering with Alibaba solves both problems at once: Qwen is a leading domestic model family, and Alibaba already works within the local regulatory system. Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said Qwen will draw on Alibaba's AI capabilities to integrate deeply into Apple's ecosystem and bring new intelligent services to Apple users in China.

For Alibaba, the deal puts Qwen inside one of the most valuable distribution channels in consumer tech: the iPhone itself. For Apple, it unlocks AI features in its second-largest market after a two-year delay, which matters for iPhone sales in China even if the feature set is a generation behind.

The bottom line

Apple Intelligence in China is real, dated and partial. Beta testing starts November 4, 2026, the public release lands in December with iOS 27.3, and Alibaba Qwen powers Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence. What you do not get is Siri AI, Image Playground or any other platform yet. If you own a supported iPhone in China, December is worth waiting for. If you were hoping for the newest Siri, that wait continues.
