Claude Duet Explained: Anthropic's Proactive AI Agent Takes on ChatGPT Dots and Meta Muse

On October 21, 2026, Anthropic launched Claude Duet, a standalone AI agent app that does something new for Claude: it comes to you instead of waiting for you to prompt it. It is Anthropic's answer to OpenAI's ChatGPT Dots and Meta's Muse, and it turns the race to build the best proactive AI agent into a three-way fight.

Here is everything we know about Claude Duet so far: what it does, what it costs, the approval gates that keep it from going rogue, and how it stacks up against Dots and Muse.

What Claude Duet is

Claude Duet is a proactive agent built around Claude Opus 5.5, Anthropic's most capable model. Instead of living inside a chat window, Duet runs on its own cloud-based computer with its own browser, and it keeps working even when your laptop is off and your phone is in your pocket.

The core loop is simple:

  1. Morning brief. Duet sends you a short briefing each morning on the important items in your connected apps.
  2. Background checks. It re-checks your apps every few hours and messages you when something needs attention.
  3. Gets it done. It completes tasks on its own, from scheduling meetings to building web apps and financial forecasts, and notifies you when a task finishes or needs your review.

Everything happens in one ongoing thread, the way you would message a person. You can type or speak, and Duet inherits your memory, skills, and connected apps from your regular Claude account, so there is almost no setup. A Tasks tab shows ongoing assignments and items that need your attention, and only you can mark a task complete.

What Claude Duet can do

Anthropic describes the target user precisely: professionals and small business owners with too much to track. The launch examples include:

  • Scanning Gmail and calendars, drafting replies for review, and flagging what matters
  • Checking Stripe for unpaid invoices and drafting payment reminders
  • Purchasing business supplies with your approval, paying through Stripe's Link digital wallet with a virtual card (your real card number is never shared) or checking out with Shopify's Shop Pay
  • Building files like presentations and financial models
  • Browsing websites that have no connector, through its own cloud browser

Duet plugs into more than 6,000 connectors and plugins in the Claude Marketplace, including Gmail and Slack, and it can search your past Claude conversations so you never have to repeat yourself.

What Claude Duet cannot do without asking

This is the part that matters most. Anthropic says Duet "is designed to ask before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document, or deletes anything." Four hard approval gates:

Bar chart: Claude Duet requires approval for four actions: send a message, make a payment, sign a document, delete a file. Routine background checks run on their own

On the safety side, Anthropic says Duet never sees your passwords or logins when you connect accounts, and a dedicated classifier plus a safety system prompt checks every message for sensitive-information leaks.

What it costs

Claude Duet is included at no extra cost. It is rolling out as a research preview through a waitlist, and access is limited to Pro and Max subscribers in the United States. Team and Enterprise plans are not eligible yet, though Anthropic says they will be added later.

The catch: Duet shares your existing plan limits. Background checks and background work count toward them, so heavy Duet use can burn through your allowance faster than chat alone. Invitations go out in waves, and the standalone apps are available on iOS, Android, and claude.ai.

Claude Duet vs ChatGPT Dots vs Meta Muse

The three products are strikingly similar in architecture: an always-on agent, a cloud VM with its own browser, and proactive outreach. Here is how they compare on what has been publicly disclosed so far.

The quick verdict: Claude Duet is the most transparently specified of the three. Anthropic published the exact approval gates, the connector count, and the limits behavior at launch. The honest caveat is that the comparison above mixes one very detailed launch announcement with two thinner ones. Dots and Muse may have equivalent safeguards that simply were not disclosed the same way.

Where Claude Duet falls short, by Anthropic's own admission

Anthropic deserves credit for stating the limits plainly:

  • Duet can misjudge urgency, flagging things that did not need you or missing things that did
  • It is less effective at personal tasks such as booking tickets
  • Background activity consumes plan limits, which will surprise users who assumed "included" meant "free"

Which to pick

  • Pick Claude Duet if you are already a Claude Pro or Max subscriber, you want a proactive agent for business admin (inbox triage, invoices, scheduling), and you like the four hard approval gates documented up front. Waitlist entry is the only friction.
  • Pick ChatGPT Dots if your team lives in Slack or Microsoft Teams and you want goal-pursuit wired into team chat. This is the team-workflow option.
  • Pick Meta Muse if you want the mainstream consumer agent with the biggest install base. Millions of downloads means more real-world usage data, but less transparency on guardrails.

One important note for businesses: proactive agents are exactly what we build at CodeMyPixel. Our AIOS work follows the same principle: an AI that watches your workflows and surfaces what needs you, with human approval before anything sensitive. If Duet shows how the consumer giants do it, our AI agents show how a business gets the same leverage on its own systems.

FAQ

What model powers Claude Duet?

Claude Opus 5.5, Anthropic's most capable model. We covered it in detail here: Claude Opus 5.5: The Greatest AI Model Ever Released?

Is Claude Duet free?

There is no extra charge beyond a Claude Pro or Max subscription, but background work counts against your plan limits, so it is not truly free to run hard.

When will Claude Duet be available outside the United States?

Anthropic has not announced a date. The research preview is US-only and waitlisted, with Team and Enterprise plans planned for later.

Can Claude Duet send emails or make purchases on its own?

No. It must ask first before sending a message, making a payment, signing a document, or deleting a file. Purchases also require a second approval inside Stripe's Link wallet.

Is Claude Duet better than ChatGPT Dots or Meta Muse?

Too early to say. Duet is the most transparently specified at launch, Dots fits team workflows in Slack and Teams, and Muse has the biggest install base. No independent benchmarks compare the three agents yet.

What is Claude Duet bad at?

By Anthropic's own account: judging urgency correctly, personal tasks like booking tickets, and conserving your plan limits.

Do I need to set everything up again for Duet?

No. Duet reuses your Claude account's memory, skills, and connected apps, so setup is minimal.
